Science Class Guidelines

What do I need to be prepared for class each day?

You need to be there on time, with
                * your  assignment/agenda book
                * a 3 ring binder (including paper) or notebook
                * a covered textbook
                * completed homework
                * a pen or pencil

What are the classroom rules?

I expect you to:
                        BE RESPECTFUL (of yourself, classmates, teachers and property)
                        BE RESPONSIBLE (for yourself and your actions)
                        BE HONEST

You should:
*Arrive to class on time.
*Raise your hand  and wait to be called on,
*Remain seated and working until class is dismissed by Ms. Groveman, NOT the clock.
*Use the sign out sheet and your agenda, if you leave the room for any reason... you must sign out (and in when you return).
* Remember, all notes taken in class should be related to the subject matter.

What about homework?

         You will get homework on a regular basis.  Homework assignments are written on the whiteboard every day.  Homework assignments can also be found on my web page.   ( 8th Grade HW),   ( 7th Grade HW)

        The amount of homework will often depend on what we are studying and how much we are able to get done during class time.  The assignments should generally not take longer than a half hour.  If you find you are regularly spending a lot more time on homework, please talk to me.   I do expect your homework to be done with care and thought.  Answers should be written in complete sentences and spelling counts.

        If work is not turned in ON TIME it is late.  Late homework will be accepted only one day late (minus ten percent) and  can be placed into the homework box on the shelf by my desk.

        If assignments are not getting completed on a regular basis, I will first discuss the work with you and you will be asked to stay  after school to complete it.

        Homework is a very large part of your grade and plays an important role in reinforcing the material you are learning.  You may fail my class if you do not do your homework regularly.

        If you are absent it is your responsibility to make up work you have missed.  Be sure to get copies of class notes from fellow students or me.   Depending on how long you were absent I will be patient while you make up the missed work, but don’t drag it out!

        If you miss class because of a school activity or trip, you are responsible for handing in the homework due that day and completing that day’s assignment on time.

What if I need help with an assignment?

        Come get it!   I am here to help you in whatever way I can.  The best time is not during class since we are usually pretty busy then.   OPT is a good time to seek help.  After school is generally good,  just ask and we can arrange a time.  I welcome students to stay after school for help or to just get work completed.

How do grades work in this class?

        Your grade will be based on  homework, labs/ activities, notebooks, tests and quizzes,  projects and class participation.  Homework assignments are generally worth 10-30 points.  In class  activities and labs may be 10-40 points and tests, quizzes and long term projects between 50-100 points. At the end of each quarter your grade will be based on the number of points you have earned out of the total number possible.

        Tests will usually be announced 1 week in advance to give you time to prepare.  Occasionally we may have unannounced quizzes.  Extra credit can be earned by doing current events presentations.

What about current events?

        It is important to be aware of events in the world around us and how they relate to what you are learning.  For this reason,  students may find a science related current events article or comic, bring it (or a copy) in to class, write a written summary of the article and tell the class about it. Everyone will have a chance to do this.  Please talk with me if you are worried about where to find an article or comic.  Each Monday our classroom receives several copies of the Valley News.  Monday is science spotlight day and this section is one good source for current events.  Your parents may be a great resource for this extra credit assignment.
