Team News -
LJHS Junior Solar Sprint Team is up and going. Solar Sprint is an annual competition coordinated by the U.S. Department of Energy. The objective is to build a solar powered car that can sprint the 20 meter track in the shortest time. Cars are judged for speed, style, and design. Each team member has the chance to work on their problem solving skills, showcase their accomplishments and see alternative solutions to engineering problems. We have a number of dedicated and enthusiastic students; some returning 8th graders as well as some new 7th and 8th grade students. The May competition seems far away but it will be here before we know it!
It is time to begin brainstorming. You can help by listening to ideas, discussing pros and cons and asking questions. The students are provided with motors, gears, solar panels, and general building supplies but the rest is up to their imaginations. Everyone is encouraged to seek out extra building materials for their cars. This year’s competition will include awards for the use of recycled materials.
We will Mondays, in room 214 from 2:30 - 3:30. Monday meetings will involve some “lessons” as well as time for design, construction, testing and redesign of a solar powered car. The atmosphere is somewhat flexible however certain rules will apply and it is important that students and parents understand the expectations for team members.
Please read the expectations and permission slip.pdf, sign and return as soon as possible. We are looking forward to another season of creative thought, experimental design, team work and fun.
Coaching will be provided by Ms. Groveman

Did you know? It takes 40 acres of ancient forest (that is 98 tons of buried plant material)
to produce 1 gallon of gasoline. This limited resource will not last much longer.
